Mercury Marine Introduced Joystick Piloting 2016 at METSTRADE 2016

Represented in Europe-Africa and MiddleEast by Brunswick Marine in EMEA, Mercury Marine is the world’s leading manufacturer of recreational marine propulsion engines.

Joystick Piloting 2016
Joystick Piloting 2016 is a system for dual, triple or quad Verado outboards. Boaters can control both throttles and steering with new/improved functions:

  • Integrated Precision Pilot Pad functionality makes Joystick operation even more intuitive.
  • Joystick’s “mode indicator” prominently indicates Route, Heading and Skyhook modes, and shows how to change Heading in 1- and 10-degree increments.
  • New LED light ring changes color to indicate status of Joystick operating mode.
  • Enhanced reverse thrust for Verado outboards provides greater control in Joystick Piloting for Outboards applications.
  • Combined auto-calibrating Inertial Measurement Unit and GPS make Joystick Piloting System easier for boat builders to install and configure.

The market opportunity leading to the development of the product
With Mercury’s next-generation JPO, Mercury Marine wanted to give boaters more confidence when docking a boat or maneuvering at low speeds by providing 360-degree fingertip control over the boat’s steering and propulsion. At the same time, the developers applied a contemporary styling which more aesthetically pleasing and more intuitive.

The impact of the innovation on the market
The redesigned joystick brings automotive styling and features to the marine world.  The joystick integrates three features, skyhook, route and auto-heading into the joystick.  The top of the knob notifies the user of the mode they are in, just like the “check engine” light on an automobile.  A light ring was added to give the user a visual indication of what they are doing with the joystick and its state. The system will contribute to easier docking and maneuvering.

The Joystick Piloting 2016 received a DAME nomination at the METSTRADE show.
